The Moscow River
Commissioned by the Moscow City Architecture Committee, The Genplan Institute of Moscow is conducting the work on "Collection, systematization and analysis of baseline data for the preparation of the Urban Development Concept for the areas adjacent to the Moscow River (within the boundaries of the city of Moscow)." Collection of information about this territory will help formulate the terms of reference more accurately and better carry out further work on the creation of the concept. The purpose of concept development is to create in Moscow a coherent system of interrelated areas adjacent to the Moscow River.
Existing use of the territories
In the project's framework, the territory for consideration was identified, as well as the direct impact zone of the Moscow River, it was also divided into functional areas.
Distribution of the renovation zones by okrugs
The large-scale renovation project will affect the territory of the city's seven okrugs, it is important to understand which of them will bear the greatest load.
The total number of bridges, their location and spacing. The average distance between the transport and the pedestrian bridges to date is 3,400 m. At this point, 16 new bridges are being designed. As a result, this figure will be reduced to 1,100 m, which will significantly improve the transport situation.
Inland water transport
We investigated the dynamics of the volume of freight and passenger traffic on the main types of external transport. Based on the collected indicators and expert coefficients, further growth was predicted.
Freight traffic volume dynamics in Moscow by types of external transport, million tonnes
Dynamics of passenger transport, thous. pers.
The territory under consideration includes 10% of the territory of the "old" Moscow (10,400 ha), its non-residential blocks make 9.4% of (17.1 million sq.km.), and its residential blocks make 2.2% (218.4 million sq.km.). This is where 8% of all the employed people are gathered (517.8 thous. pers.), and also 2% of the population live here (243.6 thous. pers.). The sectoral structure of the population employed in the economy of the area is provided below.

The role of the Moscow River in the city structure
Strategically, the Moscow River is divided into several large "rivers". This division is both natural and one resulting from the city's centuries-old influence.
Since the ancient times, closest associates of the kings settled here, a hunting reserve was also here. Currently, this is a place of recreation for the citizens, because here the air and water are the cleanest in Moscow.
The historic centre of the city is here. The spatial ensemble on the river bank is formed by the multifaceted architecture of different eras, is discrete and has language diversity.
Industrial, the most "technical" of all "rivers". On the banks, there are plants that lead to the water with their rear façades and with the waste water drainages, gantries from the Southern river port, warehouse buildings and hangars.
Following the industrial areas, and further, beyond the MKAD, the Moscow River is quiet and provincial. On the banks, there are residential micro-districts, parks and uncultivated territories, overgrown with thick greenery.
